What kind of concert can seven academically educated musicians give? Forget the lectures or the constant playing of classical melodies over and over again. »It is simply too boring to sit on stage in a suit and play, bow and sit down again. If it’s not fun we have to quit,“ the band members comment on their performance. They named themselves after the bar opposite the university where they used to play for hop brews. „Today we are playing for women, money, fast cars, television and fame,“ the musicians joked after their acrobatic concert. „People studying music have to think about how they are going to survive with this job afterwards. Because we are far too casual for chamber musicians, we incorporate our work into our performances with the help of humour,“ says the band which has been performing all over the world and is having more than 130 concerts per year.
With their work they managed to change the use and perception of brass music because they are playing all the famous tunes from the film world, popular hits, jazz arrangements and folk songs which are now and then joined by a classical melody in their own unique way. All of this is wrapped up into a playful theatre program. Each song has its own story and its own performance which makes the audience wonder if they are watching a concert or a theatre comedy. The Central stage was roaring with laughter watching the invincible Rocky or Freddy Mercury and swinging to the rhythms of almost forgotten melodies. The band members had their fun as well and were called back to the stage twice.
So, what can seven academically educated musicians do? They can find a way to make one of them play four brass instruments at the same time and up in the air!
