Hansel and Gretel live in a small house next to the woods with a strong, but indecisive father and an evil stepmother. One day, their stepmother realizes they do not have enough food so she takes the children into the woods and leave them there. Hansel and Gretel find their way home because they had left a trail of white pebbles. Next time, the stepmother decides to take the children further into the woods. This time, the children leave a trail of bread crumbs that are later eaten by hungry birds. After three days, they find a large cottage built of gingerbread and cakes, in which lives an old witch.
